After combining stop motion with Zoom for the 2020 Playgrounds BLEND titles, I wanted to give another classic animation technique a spin. With a rockstar team and just over three weeks time, we set out to reimagine the thaumatrope: a disc with two images on either side, that creates the illusion of a third image when spun around fast enough. It’s ‘BLEND’ in the most literal sense, but in order to capture the spirit of the post-digital festival too, the sequence references both analogue and digital artforms that ultimately blend into something new.
